The Azure Window was a 28-metre-tall natural limestone arch located in San Lawrenz, a small village on the western coast of the Maltese island of Gozo. The arch was formed through the erosion of the surrounding limestone cliffs by the sea over thousands of years. | |
The limestone feature, which was in Dwejra Bay close to the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock, was one of the island's major tourist attractions until it collapsed in stormy weather on 8 March 2017. The arch, together with other natural features in the area, has appeared in a number of international films and media productions including "Game of Thrones. Today, visitors can still visit the site to see the remains of the pillars and the surrounding cliffs. The area around the Azure Window is also popular for diving and snorkeling, as the clear waters around the site are home to a variety of marine life. |
