Black Chasm Cavern is a limestone cave system located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, United States. It is a popular tourist destination and is known for its stunning underground formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites.
The cavern was discovered in 1854 by a group of gold miners who were prospecting in the area. It was named Black Chasm because of the dark color of the opening and the sound of rushing water that emanated from inside.

The cave system consists of three main chambers, each with its own unique formations. The first chamber, known as the Land of the Lost, features towering stalagmites and delicate soda straws. The second chamber, the Crystal Palace, is home to sparkling crystal formations and rare helictites that twist and turn in all directions. The third chamber, called the Throne Room, contains a large underground lake and some of the largest and most impressive formations in the cave.

In addition to its natural beauty, Black Chasm Cavern has played an important role in scientific research. In the 1960s and 70s, a team of speleologists conducted extensive mapping and exploration of the cave system, which helped to deepen our understanding of the geology and hydrology of the area.

Today, visitors can explore the cave system on guided tours, which take approximately 50 minutes and cover a distance of about half a mile. The tours are led by knowledgeable guides who provide information about the history, geology, and ecology of the cavern.
