Bruce's Beach is a beach in Manhattan Beach, California, located in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. It is named after Charles and Willa Bruce, who were African American property owners in the early 1900s. | |
The Bruces purchased the land in 1912 and turned it into a beach resort that was open to African Americans, who were often excluded from other beaches in the area. Bruce's Beach became a popular spot for African American families and was one of the few places where they could enjoy the beach in a safe and welcoming environment. However, in the 1920s, the city of Manhattan Beach used eminent domain to seize the land from the Bruces, citing the need for a park. The Bruces fought the seizure in court but lost, and the city took possession of the land. The city then used the land to build a park, which was eventually renamed "Bayview Terrace Park." In 2006, the Manhattan Beach City Council apologized for the city's actions in taking the land from the Bruces and recognized the historical significance of Bruce's Beach as a site of African American history. In 2021, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to return the land to the descendants of the Bruces, who still live in the area. The transfer of the property is currently in progress. |
