Carolands Chateau is a historic mansion located in Hillsborough, California. It was built by Harriet Pullman Carolan, the daughter of George Pullman, in 1914. The mansion is a four-story, 65,000 square-foot Beaux-Arts style structure, which was designed by the French architect Ernest Sanson in collaboration with the San Francisco architectural firm of Newsom & Newsom. | |
The chateau is notable for its grandiose scale and opulent features, such as a 98-foot-long ballroom, a grand staircase with 52 steps, a music room with a 45-foot-high ceiling, and a kitchen with an enormous coal-fired range. The mansion also boasts beautiful gardens and terraces, as well as a reflecting pool and a tennis court. Carolands Chateau has had an interesting history, including being used as a hospital during World War II and later being divided into apartments. In the 1990s, the mansion was purchased by a group of investors who began a massive restoration project to return it to its former grandeur.
