Carrizo Plain National Monument is located near Santa Margarita, California, in the southeastern part of San Luis Obispo County. It is a remote and largely undeveloped area that is home to a variety of plant and animal species, as well as important cultural resources.
The Carrizo Plain National Monument encompasses over 200,000 acres of grasslands, wetlands, and riparian areas, as well as several important geological features, such as the San Andreas Fault. It is also home to several endangered and threatened species, including the San Joaquin kit fox, the blunt-nosed leopard lizard, and the giant kangaroo rat.

Visitors to the Carrizo Plain National Monument can explore the area by hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The area is also popular for birdwatching, with over 200 species of birds having been recorded in the area. The Carrizo Plain is especially beautiful during the spring, when wildflowers cover the landscape in vibrant colors.

To access the Carrizo Plain National Monument from Santa Margarita, visitors can take Highway 58 east for approximately 30 miles. The entrance to the monument is located on the south side of the highway, just east of the town of Soda Lake.
