The Wilder Institute is the conservation arm of the Calgary Zoo. It is a global authority on wildlife conservation and has played a role in the recovery of species such as the whooping crane and the Vancouver Island marmot. The institute's work focuses on species recovery and reintroduction, as well as community conservation, where they collaborate with local communities to find solutions that benefit both animals and people. The Calgary Zoo is home to over 1,400 animals representing more than 130 species. One-third of the zoo's species are part of Species Survival Plans, a global initiative to conserve genetic diversity in endangered species. The zoo also has a number of educational programs that teach visitors about the importance of conservation. |
