Devil's Town is a unique and fascinating natural landmark located in southern Serbia, near the town of Kuršumlija. Known for its unusual rock formations and eerie folklore, it is one of Serbia's most famous natural attractions and a candidate for the New Seven Wonders of Nature. | |
- Devil's Town consists of approximately 200 unusual rock towers or pillars, ranging in height from 2 to 15 meters (6.5 to 49 feet) and 0.5 to 3 meters (1.6 to 10 feet) in diameter. These formations were created by erosion, where softer material eroded away, leaving behind harder, resistant rock caps that protect the pillars beneath. - The site also features two springs: "Devil's Water" and "Red Well". The springs are rich in minerals, and the water has a reddish hue due to high iron content. The acidic water has an otherworldly appearance and contributes to the eerie atmosphere. - According to local legend, the formations are petrified wedding guests who were turned to stone by supernatural forces. The story varies, but it often involves divine intervention to prevent an inappropriate marriage. The name "Devil's Town" stems from these legends and the belief that the area is cursed or haunted by spirits. |
