Easter Island Chile Last Updated: 04/11/2024
Easter Island is a remote island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, and is known for its mysterious stone statues called Moai. The island is a territory of Chile and is also known as Rapa Nui by its indigenous Polynesian population.
The island was settled by Polynesians around 800 CE and the Moai were carved between the 13th and 16th centuries. There are more than 900 Moai statues on the island, with the largest one weighing 86 tons. The Moai were believed to represent ancestors and were placed on platforms called ahu facing inland. Easter Island is also known for its ecological disaster. The deforestation of the island led to soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. This caused the collapse of the civilization on the island, as it became unable to sustain its population. The island is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and efforts are being made to restore the ecosystem. Today, Easter Island is a popular tourist destination, with visitors coming to see the Moai statues, as well as to enjoy the island's beaches, scuba diving, and other outdoor activities. |
