Haeinsa Temple, located in the Gyeongsangnam-do province of South Korea, is one of the most important and revered Buddhist temples in the country. It is nestled in the serene mountains of Gayasan National Park and is renowned for its historical, cultural, and spiritual significance. | |
Haeinsa was originally built in 802 AD during the Silla Dynasty and is primarily known for housing the Tripitaka Koreana, a comprehensive collection of Buddhist scriptures carved onto more than 80,000 wooden printing blocks. The Tripitaka Koreana, completed in the 13th century, is a remarkable feat of craftsmanship and devotion, reflecting Korea’s dedication to preserving Buddhist teachings. These wooden blocks are stored in specially designed depositories known as the Janggyeong Panjeon, which are crafted to provide optimal conditions to preserve the wood without modern technology. The depositories’ unique design allows for natural ventilation and regulates humidity, effectively safeguarding the wood blocks from decay for over 700 years. |
