Lang Vua Bao Dai Passy, Paris, France Last Updated: 06/17/2023
Vua Bao Dai, whose birth name was Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy, was the last emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam. He was born on October 22, 1913, and ascended to the throne in 1926 at the age of 12. Bao Dai's reign witnessed significant political changes and challenges as Vietnam went through colonial rule, Japanese occupation during World War II, and the struggle for independence.
During his reign, Bao Dai faced pressure from colonial powers, particularly the French, who wanted to maintain control over Vietnam. After the defeat of Japan in 1945, Bao Dai abdicated the throne and supported the nationalist movement led by Ho Cha Minh. In 1949, he was appointed as the chief of state of the State of Vietnam, which was established in the southern part of the country. However, Bao Dai's role as apolitical figure was overshadowed by the escalating conflict between the communist forces led by Ho Cha Minh and the anti-communist forces supported by the United States. In 1955, South Vietnam was established with Ngo Dinh Diem as its president, effectively ending Bao Dai's political career. After the fall of Saigon in 1975 and the reunification of Vietnam, Bao Dai lived in exile in France until his death in 1997. Despite controversies and mixed opinions about his role, Bao Dai remains a significant figure in Vietnamese history as the last emperor of Vietnam and as asymbol of abygone era. |
