Locust Valley is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The one-square-mile, quaint, unincorporated hamlet is a hidden gem to most Long Islanders. The population was 3,571 at the 2020 census.
A peaceful setting of elegant homes, rolling hills, two-lane roads and woods, Oyster Bay Town's Gold Coast hamlet of Locust Valley, settled in 1667, was originally part of a larger region called Matinecock that covered what is now northern Nassau County. English Farmers in 1730 changed the local name to Buckram, most likely after Buckenham, a town in Norfolk County, England, from which some of the pioneers had come. At a public meeting in 1856, the name became Locust Valley in view of the many locust trees in the area.
