The National Memorial Chorten, also known as Thimphu Chorten or Chhoten Lam, is a stupa (a dome-shaped Buddhist monument) located in the heart of Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. It was built in 1974 to honor the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–1972), who is often referred to as the father of modern Bhutan. | |
The stupa is a prominent landmark in the city with its golden spires and bells. In 2008, it underwent extensive renovation. It is popularly known as "the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan". The stupa is a popular destination for both locals and tourists and is one of the most visible landmarks in Thimphu. It is decorated with intricate carvings and paintings that depict Buddhist teachings, and it is surrounded by a beautiful garden that is often filled with people performing circumambulations (walking around the stupa in a clockwise direction). The National Memorial Chorten is also a place of prayer and contemplation for many Bhutanese, who come here to offer prayers and offerings and to seek blessings for themselves and their loved ones. Inside the stupa, there are three floors, each with shrines and statues dedicated to different deities and Buddhist figures. The Chorten is open to visitors every day, but it is especially busy during religious festivals and on weekends, when many locals come to offer prayers and make offerings. Visitors are asked to dress modestly and to remove their shoes before entering the stupa. |
