Mahadji Shinde Chhatri, located in Wanawadi, Pune, is a significant memorial dedicated to the 18th-century Maratha military leader Mahadji Shinde. He served as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army under the Peshwas from 1760 to 1780. The memorial marks the spot of his cremation on February 12, 1794, and originally included a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which Shinde himself constructed shortly before his death. | |
The memorial complex was initially established by Mahadji Shinde, who died in 1794. His last rites were performed at this site. In 1910, a samadhi (memorial) was built by Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia of Gwalior, a descendant of Shinde. The Chhatri showcases exquisite architecture influenced by Rajasthani styles, featuring intricate carvings and a blend of Vastu Shastra principles. The hall contains beautiful colored window panes and is adorned with photographs of the Shinde family. |
