Moss Landing Wildlife Area is an 872-acre property that is part of the largest unaltered salt marsh along the California coast. The tidal marsh is dominated almost exclusively by perennial pickleweed. Elkhorn Slough is an essential 'pit-stop' for migratory shorebirds. Mammals such as harbor seal and sea otter also occur in the area. | |
Many of the over 300 species of birds recorded in the watershed of Elkhorn Slough also occur within the Moss Landing Wildlife Area, most notably the Federally threatened Western Snowy plover. These plovers nest and feed in the Wildlife Area's former salt ponds. The wildlife area is situated at the mouth of Elkhorn Slough, a large tidal estuary that serves as an important habitat for numerous species of birds, fish, and other wildlife. Visitors to Moss Landing State Wildlife Area can enjoy birdwatching, hiking, and fishing, as well as boating and kayaking in the slough. Some of the wildlife species that can be found in Moss Landing State Wildlife Area include harbor seals, sea otters, black-tailed deer, coyotes, and a variety of bird species, such as pelicans, herons, and egrets. The area also serves as an important breeding ground for several endangered species, including the California least tern and the Western snowy plover. Moss Landing State Wildlife Area is managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and is open to the public year-round. |
