Nauru, officially known as the Republic of Nauru, is a small island country located in the Micronesian region of the Pacific Ocean. It is the third smallest country in the world by area, covering just 21 square kilometers (8.1 square miles), and has a population of around 10,000 people. | |
Nauru was once one of the richest countries in the world due to its abundant phosphate deposits, which were extensively mined from the early 20th century. However, by the late 20th century, the deposits had been largely depleted, leading to economic decline and social issues on the island. Today, Nauru's economy is largely dependent on aid from foreign countries, as well as income from offshore banking and the detention of asylum seekers in the Australian-run Nauru Regional Processing Centre. Nauru has a parliamentary system of government, with the President as the head of state and government. Its official language is Nauruan, although English is also widely spoken. |
