Okaloosa County was formed from the eastern ranges of Santa Rosa County and the western ranges of Walton County. The name "Okaloosa" comes from the Choctaw language, meaning "black water," which refers to the darkened water of the area's lakes and bayous due to tannins released from the trees along the banks.
