Okaloosa County is located in the northwestern part of Florida, extending from the Gulf of Mexico to the Alabama state line. The county seat is Crestview, and its population as of the 2020 census was 211,668. Okaloosa County is part of the Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Okaloosa County was formed from the eastern ranges of Santa Rosa County and the western ranges of Walton County. The name "Okaloosa" comes from the Choctaw language, meaning "black water," which refers to the darkened water of the area's lakes and bayous due to tannins released from the trees along the banks.
