The first settler, Freeman Hopkins, arrived in 1806. He built a log cabin on the lakeshore, marking the beginning of settlement in the area. Ontario was known for its iron industry in the 19th century, with several furnaces operating until competition from larger mines made local production impractical. Ontario features several hamlets, including Ontario Center and Ontario-on-the-Lake. The town is home to unique cobblestone architecture, with many cobblestone houses built between 1825 and 1860. Notable attractions include Casey Park and Shadow Hills Maple Syrup Farm, contributing to its appeal as a rural community close to urban amenities. |
