Subway Cave is a lava tube that was formed during volcanic events just twenty thousand years ago. It was created when lava flowed beneath a solidified crust, forming a tunnel that eventually emptied as the lava drained. The cave is about 1/3 of a mile (0.6 kilometers) long and features a large, arched ceiling.. The trailhead is located less than half a mile from the junction of Highway 89 and Highway 44 in Old Station.
- The cave provides insight into the region's volcanic history. The walls and ceiling of the cave are lined with basalt, a type of volcanic rock, and visitors can observe unique lava flow patterns.

- Subway Cave is easily accessible from Highway 44 near Old Station. Visitors can walk through the cave using a self-guided tour. The cave is dark, so flashlights or headlamps are essential for exploring.

- The cave maintains a consistent cool temperature year-round, making it a refreshing destination during summer months.
