Shadow Cliffs, formerly a gravel quarry, was donated to the Park District by Kaiser Industries and opened as a park in 1971. Its assessed value of $250,000 was used to obtain a matching grant for development of the park from the U.S. Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. With this start, the Park District has developed a 266-acre park including an 80-acre lake and ample parking and picnic grounds. There are facilities for persons with disabilities. Besides the main lake, Shadow Cliffs has an arroyo with a chain of smaller lakes and ponds. No swimming or boating is allowed here; the shady areas and quiet waters make for a peaceful retreat on hot summer days. The lake at Shadow Cliffs is stocked with rainbow trout, catfish, and bass, making it a popular spot for fishing. There are also picnic areas and barbecue grills available for public use, as well as a playground for children. Swimming is permitted in designated areas of the lake during the summer months, and there is a lifeguard on duty during peak hours. Boating is also popular at Shadow Cliffs, with rentals available for paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes. In addition to water activities, Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area has several miles of hiking trails that wind through the hills and around the lake. The trails offer scenic views of the park and are accessible to hikers of all skill levels. To access Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area, take the I-580 to the Santa Rita Road exit in Pleasanton. From there, follow signs to the park entrance. There is a parking fee of $6 per vehicle, and the park is open from 6:00 am to sunset. |
