San Ignacio Mini was one of the many missions founded in 1610 in Argentina, by the Jesuits in what the colonial Spaniards called the Province of Paraguay of the Americas during the Spanish colonial period. | |
It was founded by fathers José Cataldino and Simón Masseta in 1610. Due to attacks by bandeirantes they had to emigrate. Father Antonio Ruiz de Montoya led the exodus of 12,000 aborigines through the jungles and rivers of the region. After several temporary settlements, in 1696 they were permanently established. At its peak it had a population of 4,500 Guaraníes. After the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, San Ignacio Miní survived until it was destroyed during the border war of 1817. |
