Tavurvur Papua New Guinea Last Updated: 04/29/2023
Tavurvur is a stratovolcano located near the town of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the country, and has erupted multiple times in the past century, with the most recent eruptions occurring in 2014 and 2015.
The volcano is part of a larger volcanic complex known as the Rabaul caldera, which also includes several other volcanoes and volcanic features. The caldera was formed during a massive eruption in 536 AD, which is thought to have been one of the largest volcanic events in the past 10,000 years. Tavurvur's eruptions are characterized by explosive activity, and can produce ash plumes that reach heights of several kilometers. In addition to ashfall, eruptions can also produce lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and lahars (mudflows caused by volcanic ash mixing with water). Despite its frequent activity, Tavurvur is also a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can hike to its summit to view its crater and surrounding scenery. However, hiking to the summit is considered dangerous and is not recommended during periods of increased volcanic activity. |
