The Gates of Hell is the nickname for the Darvaza (or Derweze) Gas Crater, a natural gas field located in the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. The site has been burning continuously since 1971 and has become a surreal and haunting tourist attraction due to its fiery appearance, especially at night.
- In 1971, Soviet geologists were drilling for natural gas when the ground beneath their drilling rig collapsed, creating a large crater.

- Fearing the release of toxic methane gas, the scientists decided to burn it off, believing the gas would burn out in a few days. However, the gas has continued to burn for over 50 years, giving the crater its iconic fiery appearance.

- The crater is about 70 meters (230 feet) wide and 20 meters (66 feet) deep.

Though not intentionally created as a tourist attraction, it has drawn many visitors curious to see this ongoing, fiery spectacle. There have been discussions about extinguishing the fire to reduce its environmental impact, but for now, it continues to burn.
