Wakayama is home to the famous Kumano Kodo, ancient pilgrimage trails that wind through the mountains. They connect three sacred shrines: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Kumano Hayatama Taisha, known collectively as the Kumano Sanzan. These trails, which were added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list, have been walked for over a thousand years. Mount Koya is a significant spiritual destination in Japan and the center of Shingon Buddhism. Founded by the monk Kukai in the 9th century, Koyasan has dozens of temples and offers the chance to stay in shukubo (temple lodgings), where guests can experience Buddhist customs and traditional vegetarian cuisine. Located in the capital, Wakayama City, Wakayama Castle is a major landmark and offers beautiful panoramic views. The castle grounds are especially stunning during cherry blossom season in spring. |
