Wrights Hill Fortress is a historic World War II coastal defense installation located in Wellington, New Zealand. Constructed between 1942 and 1944, the fortress was part of New Zealand's coastal defense network, built to protect the country from potential naval attacks, particularly from Japan.
The site features extensive underground tunnels, gun emplacements, and command rooms designed to coordinate the defense of Wellington and its harbor.

The fortress was equipped with two large 9.2-inch guns, capable of firing shells over 30 kilometers (around 18 miles) out to sea. However, these guns were never fired in combat, and by the time they were fully operational, the threat of invasion had significantly decreased. After World War II, the guns were removed and scrapped, but the tunnels and fortifications remain largely intact.

Today, Wrights Hill Fortress is open to the public on certain days throughout the year, particularly during special events like public holidays or guided tours. Visitors can explore the underground network of tunnels, view displays of military artifacts, and learn about the history of New Zealand’s coastal defenses. The site also offers panoramic views of Wellington, making it a popular spot for both history enthusiasts and sightseers.
