Yungas Road Bolivia Last Updated: 06/22/2024
The Yungas Road, also known as "Death Road," is a mountainous cycle route about 60 km long which links the city of La Paz and the Yungas region of Bolivia. It draws about 25,000 tourists per year and is a major La Paz tourist attraction. Many tour operators cater to downhill mountain biking, providing information, guides, transport and equipment.
The tourist route is a 64 km-long road with 3500 metres of descent. Yungas Road has been responsible for numerous accidents and fatalities over the years. It is estimated that 200 to 300 people died on this road each year before a new highway was built in 2006. The new road, which is wider and has guardrails, has largely replaced the Yungas Road as the main route between La Paz and Coroico. Despite the risks, Yungas Road remains a popular destination for adventure tourism. Many tourists visit the road to bike or hike down its steep slopes, and some companies offer guided tours of the road. However, caution is advised, and it is important to choose a reputable tour operator if you decide to take on this challenge. |
