Salem, Oregon, is the capital city of the state of Oregon. Salem is located in the Willamette Valley, in the northwest part of Oregon. It is about 47 miles (76 kilometers) south of Portland. Salem had an estimated population of around 174,365 residents, making it the second-most populous city in Oregon after Portland. The city covers an area of approximately 48 square miles (124 square kilometers).
