The King Range National Conservation Area encompasses 68,000 acres along 35-miles of California's dramatic north coast, where the landscape was too rugged for highway building, forcing State Highway 1 inland. Accessible by only a few back roads, this remote region of mountains and seascapes is also known as California's Lost Coast.
This is a large, mostly west-facing, black sand beach with offshore reefs just north of the town of Shelter Cove. Black Sands Beach is a picturesque and relaxing. The black sand that covers the beach and has given the spot its name is very unusual. The beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of coastline 45 miles south of Eureka in Northern California.
Redwood Park is adjacent to the Community Forest and offers trail access into the forest. The Park has a playground, picnic areas and restrooms as well as public meeting spaces.
The Headwaters Forest Reserve (Elk River Trailhead & Old Town of Falk Tour) was set aside to protect and preserve the ecology and wildlife of the area. Particularly the old-growth redwood stands that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet, and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon.
With its long sand spit separating the lagoon from the ocean, Big Lagoon is a beachcombing paradise, and if one is willing to walk far enough you can truly be alone. Big Lagoon is a favorite fishing spot for cutthroat trout.

Fifty miles north of Eureka, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park protects sandy beaches and open meadows grazed by magnificent herds of Roosevelt elk. Ferns cascade down canyon walls. Lush stands of the world's tallest living tree species, the coast redwood, stand in primeval majesty.
California's 3rd largest state park, with over 53,000 acres, and the largest old growth contiguous redwood forest in the world! Drive along the 32 mile Avenue of the Giants to explore Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It contains Rockefeller Forest, the world's largest remaining contiguous old-growth forest of coast redwoods.
Redwood Creek Beach is located at the mouth of Redwood Creek about two miles south of the town of Orick in northern Humboldt County. This day-use picnic area is part of Redwood National Park and has a large parking area, clean facilities, and access to a sandy driftwood-covered beach. The National Park’s Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center is adjacent to the picnic area.
Home of the world’s tallest trees, this World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve protects nearly half of the world’s old growth redwoods. Redwood National and State Parks, located in northern California along the coast, are a collection of protected areas that preserve and showcase the iconic coastal redwood trees.
Lady Bird Johnson Grove rests near the top of a ridge in Redwood National Park, more than 1,000 feet from sea level. The moist conditions and the extra rain brought by the elevation causes the redwoods in this grove to look less red than trees of that sort found elsewhere on the North Coast.

Richardson Grove State Park is located at the southernmost border of Humboldt County, south of Eureka, California. It is known for swimming on the South Fork of the Eel River and day use in addition to 159 campsites.
Located south of Eureka on Humboldt Bay, King Salmon’s unique canal community offers great bay access and plenty of fishing and recreation amenities. Have a picnic on the beach or at Buhne’s Point, famous for where Captain Buhne landed in 1850 and founded Humboldt City.
Sequoia Park is a 67 acre facility next to Sequoia Park Zoo that features walking and bicycle trails through the redwood forest, meadows, duck pond and two small creeks. The park includes two playgrounds, open turf grass, picnic tables, a restroom, group picnic area and a gazebo bandstand.
For more than 100 years, Shady Dell was a private, hidden treasure, but in 2011 Save the Redwoods League purchased the 957-acre property and began planning its protection and restoration. In 2016, with the help of a number of partners, the Peter Douglas Coastal Trail was opened, giving the public an opportunity to experience this special place firsthand.
