The West Kern Oil Museum is a treasure trove of information about the city history and documentation of the petroleum industry. The West Kern Oil Museum includes indoor and outdoor meeting spaces, vintage office, shops, and equipment, a fire house, a tent house, a shotgun house, a transportation building, a tool house, a library and a gift shop.
In 1985, the Fort was given to the West Kern Oil Museum, and in 1992, the Fort Preservation Society was formed and became the owner of the Historic Fort. Now the Fort is used for offices, meeting rooms, and as a wedding venue and is managed by an on-site Executive Director, Edith Laurin.

Taft is located 32 miles (51 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield, at an elevation of 955 feet (291 m). The population was 9,327 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.1 square miles (39.1 km2).
