Guatemala is a country located in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize and the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Its capital and largest city is Guatemala City. The population of Guatemala is estimated to be around 18 million people, and its official language is Spanish, although there are also many indigenous languages spoken in the country.
Guatemala has a rich cultural heritage, with a mix of indigenous Mayan and Spanish colonial influences. It is known for its traditional textiles, colorful markets, and ancient ruins, such as the Mayan city of Tikal.

However, Guatemala also faces many challenges, including high levels of poverty, inequality, and violence. The country has a history of political instability, including a civil war that lasted from 1960 to 1996, which has had lasting effects on the country's social and economic development.

Despite these challenges, Guatemala has made progress in recent years, with improvements in areas such as health and education. The country is also working to promote tourism and attract foreign investment, with a focus on sustainable development.

Guatemala City is the site of the Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu, founded around 1500 BC. Following the Spanish conquest, a new town was established, and in 1776 it was made capital of Spanish Guatemala.
