Tehama is a city in Tehama County, California, United States. The population of Tehama was 435 at the 2020 census, up from 418 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by Robert Hasty Thomes in 1844 and was one of the earliest California settlements north of Sacramento. Tehama was established as the County Seat of Tehama County in 1856 but lost this status to Red Bluff the following year. | |
The city had a reputation for being more liberal and freewheeling than other areas in the county. Tehama's population peaked in the 1890s at around 2,000 residents, including a sizable Chinese quarter. The city was incorporated in 1906 but faced challenges such as a disastrous fire in 1908 and the decline of riverboat traffic, leading to a gradual loss of prominence and population.
