| The Cahokia Mounds archaeological site preserves 70 of the 120 original earthen mounds built by prehistoric Native Americans. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top of Monks Mound, where signs explain the impressive views from above. | |
| Other physical features include a reconstructed city wall and “Woodhenge,” a circle of columns around a central pillar, from which the sun can be aligned to determine the season and time of year. Steppe grasses in some locations offer glimpses of the area’s native vegetation. The interpretive center houses museum galleries, a full-size model of a village, a presentation cinema, a public program auditorium, a museum shop, snack vending machines, public restrooms, staff offices, and a courtyard for educational programs. | |
