Emperor Đồng Khánh was the ninth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam. He reigned three years between 1885 and 1889. He was born on March 20, 1864, in Hue, the capital city of Vietnam at the time and was another adopted son of Tu Duc who usurped the throne shortly after the French gained control of Hue. The tomb of Emperor Dong Khanh is the smallest. | |
| Dong Khanh became emperor in 1885 after the French colonial authorities deposed his predecessor, Emperor Hiep Hoa, and placed him on the throne as a puppet ruler. Despite this, Dong Khanh tried to assert his authority and maintain the independence of Vietnam. During his brief reign, Dong Khanh implemented several reforms aimed at modernizing Vietnam's economy and society, including the introduction of new technologies and the establishment of schools and hospitals. He also supported the arts and culture, commissioning several works of literature and promoting traditional Vietnamese music and theater. However, Dong Khanh's attempts to resist French influence were largely unsuccessful, and he was eventually forced to sign several unequal treaties that ceded control of key territories and resources to France. He died on January 28, 1889, at the age of 24, and was succeeded by his cousin, Emperor Thanh Thai. Despite his short reign, Dong Khanh is remembered as a symbol of Vietnamese resistance to colonialism and as a patron of the arts and culture. Several buildings and monuments in Vietnam, including the Dong Khanh Tomb in Hue, have been dedicated to his memory. | |
