The Coronado Butterfly Preserve, also known as the Ellwood Main Monarch Grove, which is situated in nearby Ellwood Mesa, just west of Goleta is a well-known destination for monarch butterfly viewing during their annual migration.
Every year, thousands of monarch butterflies gather in the grove from late October to February. These butterflies seek shelter and warmth in the eucalyptus trees of the preserve, creating a spectacular natural phenomenon. Visitors can witness the butterflies clustered together in massive numbers, creating a breathtaking sight.

The Coronado Butterfly Preserve offers walking trails and interpretive signs that provide information about the monarch butterfly lifecycle, their migration patterns, and the importance of preserving their habitats. It's important to note that the monarch butterfly population can vary from year to year, and the best time to visit is typically during the peak migration season, which is around late November to early January. The site is open sunrise to sunset with no admission fee.
