The Great Lakes are a group of five large freshwater lakes located in North America on the border between the United States and Canada. They are the largest group of freshwater lakes by total area in the world and hold about 21% of the world's surface fresh water.
Lake Superior

- Size: Largest of the Great Lakes, both in surface area and volume.
- Surface Area: Approximately 31,700 square miles (82,100 square kilometers).
- Volume: 2,900 cubic miles (12,100 cubic kilometers).
- Depth: Average depth is 483 feet (147 meters); maximum depth is 1,332 feet (406 meters).
- Location: Bordered by Ontario (Canada) to the north, Minnesota to the west, and Wisconsin and Michigan to the south.

Lake Michigan

- Size: Second-largest by volume and the third-largest by surface area.
- Surface Area: About 22,400 square miles (58,000 square kilometers).
- Volume: 1,180 cubic miles (4,920 cubic kilometers).
- Depth: Average depth is 279 feet (85 meters); maximum depth is 925 feet (282 meters).
- Location: Entirely within the United States, bordered by Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana.

Lake Huron

- Size: Second-largest by surface area and the fifth-largest by volume.
- Surface Area: Approximately 23,000 square miles (59,600 square kilometers).
- Volume: 850 cubic miles (3,540 cubic kilometers).
- Depth: Average depth is 195 feet (59 meters); maximum depth is 750 feet (229 meters).
- Location: Bordered by Ontario (Canada) to the north and east, and Michigan to the west.

Lake Erie

- Size: Fourth-largest by surface area and smallest by volume.
- Surface Area: Around 9,910 square miles (25,700 square kilometers).
- Volume: 116 cubic miles (484 cubic kilometers).
- Depth: Average depth is 62 feet (19 meters); maximum depth is 210 feet (64 meters).
- Location: Bordered by Ontario (Canada) to the north, and Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan to the south.

Lake Ontario

- Size: Smallest by surface area but larger than Lake Erie by volume.
- Surface Area: Approximately 7,340 square miles (19,000 square kilometers).
- Volume: 393 cubic miles (1,639 cubic kilometers).
- Depth: Average depth is 283 feet (86 meters); maximum depth is 802 feet (244 meters).
- Location: Bordered by Ontario (Canada) to the north and New York to the south.
