Hon Chen Shrine (Điện Hòn Chén) perches on the southeast slope of Mount Ngoc Tran, overlooking Huong river and opposite Vong Canh Hill. The temple had existed along time before Emperor Minh Mang renovated and expanded in 1832.
Hon Chen Temple is the place where the Cham people worshiped the goddess PoNagar in the past, then the Vietnamese people followed Thien Tien Thanh Giao and continued to worship her with the name Thien YA Na.

Hon Chen Temple was originally a temple to worship the goddess PoNagar ( Goddess of the Motherland ) of the Cham people. According to Cham folklore, goddess PoNagar is the child of the Jade Emperor who was sent to earth, she was credited with creating the earth and all kinds of agarwood and rice. Frankincense and agar wood are woods that represent the goddess's epiphany. She also radiates the sweet scent of rice, encouraging people to plant bodhi trees.
