Horsetail Falls is a waterfall located in Yosemite National Park, California, United States. It is a seasonal waterfall that flows over the eastern edge of El Capitan, one of the most iconic rock formations in the park.
Horsetail Falls is best known for its "firefall" effect, which occurs when the setting sun illuminates the waterfall and gives it a fiery appearance. This phenomenon only occurs for a few days each year in mid- to late-February, when the sun's angle is just right to reflect off the waterfall and create the illusion of fire.

During the "firefall" event, the waterfall attracts thousands of visitors who come to witness the stunning display. Many visitors gather at the designated viewing areas near El Capitan Picnic Area and Yosemite Valley Lodge to watch the sunset and see the waterfall light up in shades of orange and red.

Outside of the "firefall" event, Horsetail Falls is still a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. There are several hiking trails in the area that provide stunning views of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape, including the Horsetail Falls Trail, which is a short, steep hike that leads to the base of the waterfall.

For a few weeks in February, if the water is flowing in Horsetail Fall, photographers and park visitors gather in the waning evening light for an amazing natural display. The Horsetail Fall phenomenon appears when the angle of the setting sun sets the waterfall ablaze with reds and oranges, like a fire was falling down the cliffs on the shoulder of El Capitan.

Where:
Horsetail Falls is located in Yosemite Valley and is easily accessible by car or shuttle bus. The best time to visit is during the winter and spring months, when the waterfall is at its peak flow and the "firefall" effect is most likely to occur.

The most convenient, and frequently shot view of Horsetail Fall is at the El Capitan picnic area, approximately 1.7 miles past Yosemite Lodge at the Falls on Northside Drive. In late February, you’ll often see rows of photographers of all levels there catching the last rays of light in the evening.
