Independence Square, known locally as Dataran Merdeka, is one of the most historically significant and iconic landmarks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This large open field is where the Union Jack was lowered, and the Malaysian flag was raised for the first time at the stroke of midnight on August 31, 1957, marking the country’s independence from British colonial rule.
Merdeka Field is a vast green field that was once the Selangor Club Padang, primarily used by British settlers for cricket and other recreational activities. Today, it serves as a venue for national events, parades, and celebrations, including the annual Merdeka Day Parade.

The square features one of the tallest flagpoles in the world, standing at 95 meters. The flagpole is a symbolic marker of Malaysia’s independence.
