Kopu Lighthouse Kõpu Lighthouse, Mägipe, 92233 Hiiu maakond, Estonia Last Updated: 01/27/2026 |
| The Kopu Lighthouse is built at an altitude of 67 meters above sea level, at the highest point on Hiiumaa Island. It is 36 meters above ground level, meaning its light shines at an altitude of 102.6 meters above sea level. No other lighthouse in the Baltic Sea is as tall. | |
| The history of the oldest lighthouse, not only in Estonia but anywhere in the Baltic states and indeed on the Baltic Sea, spans 500 years, dating back to when landmarks were essential for guiding ships in the Hanseatic League. The most important east-west trade route in Northern Europe passed through Hiiumaa Island, and merchants complained about ships disappearing on the Baltic Sea. This led to the construction of the lighthouse at Kõpu to warn ships of low water levels off the island. | |
