The Middle of the World City, known as Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, is a popular tourist site located just north of Quito, Ecuador. It marks the approximate location of the Equator, where visitors can stand with one foot in each hemisphere. The site features a large monument topped with a globe, built to commemorate the 18th-century French Geodesic Mission, which sought to confirm the Earth’s equatorial bulge and accurately map the Equator. | |
The monument is surrounded by a small complex with museums, shops, and restaurants. Inside, the Ethnographic Museum showcases Ecuador’s diverse indigenous cultures, with displays of traditional clothing, artifacts, and information about the country’s rich heritage. Near the main monument, there is also a yellow line marking the Equator, which has become a popular photo spot. In addition to its historical and geographical significance, the Middle of the World City also offers fun interactive exhibits about the Equator's unique gravitational effects, such as demonstrations of water draining in opposite directions on each hemisphere. While modern GPS measurements have since placed the actual Equator slightly north of the monument, the site remains a significant cultural and educational attraction in Ecuador. |
