Located in Thoai Son, An Giang, Ốc Eo is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. It was once a major port city of the Funan Kingdom, a powerful maritime empire that flourished from the 1st to the 7th centuries AD. Oc Eo played a crucial role as a link on the Maritime Silk Road, connecting the Roman Empire, India, and China.
Ancient inhabitants built complex canal systems for irrigation and transportation, helping them conquer the swampy lands of the Mekong Delta.

The ancient Funan Kingdom (1st - 7th centuries AD) was once a powerful maritime empire, centered in the lower Mekong River basin, primarily in present-day Southern Vietnam and Southeastern Cambodia. Its most important archaeological site is the Oc Eo culture (Thoai Son district, An Giang province), which was once a thriving port city.
