| The prestigious noble family of Lord Hradec acquired the land in 1561. Two years later, the new owners had the original Gothic castle rebuilt into a Renaissance castle. At the end of the 16th century, the next owners were the Malovice family, who, being Protestant, lost ownership in 1619, and four years later, Emperor Ferdinand II of the Habsburg dynasty granted it as war reparations to the Spanish general Don Balthasar de Marradas. In 1661, Jan Adolf I of Schwarzenberg purchased Hluboká from his nephew. The Schwarzenberg family lived in Hluboká until the end of 1939, when the last owner, Dr. Adolf, emigrated to escape the Nazis. They lost permanent ownership through a special act, Lex Schwarzenberg, in 1947. Thanks to excellent property management and large-scale economic activities, the Schwarzenberg family rebuilt Hluboká Castle twice, first in the early 18th century in the Baroque style, and then undertook extensive reconstructions of the castle in the Romantic Neo-Gothic style between 1840 and 1871, including the rearrangement of the surrounding park and countryside. The reconstruction of Hluboka Castle was influenced by the trips to England of its then-owner, Prince Jan Adolf II of Schwarzenberg, and his wife, Princess Eleonore, then Princess of Liechtenstein. The main model for the project was Windsor Castle. The reconstruction work began on the design of the Viennese architect Franz Beer, and after his death, the Schwarzenberg construction contractor Damasius Deworetzky continued the work, with a particular focus on the opulent interior design. | |
