The Golden Gate Bridge opened to pedestrians on May 27, 1937, and to traffic the following day, May 28, 1937. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge ever built. It is truly an engineering marvel, a structure of magnificence, grace, and beauty.

Battery Crosby was completed and armed in 1900 with two 6-inch guns mounted on disappearing carriages. The battery was built to protect underwater minefields laid outside the Golden Gate during the time of war and against destroyers and minesweeper warships.
