St. Mark's Cathedral, often called St. Mark's Basilica, is the cathedral of the Patriarchate of Venice; it became the episcopal seat of the Patriarchate of Venice in 1807, replacing the previous cathedral, San Pietro di Castello. The cathedral is dedicated to and houses the relics of St. Mark the Apostle, the patron saint of the city.
