| Lhasa is the capital city of the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. It is located in the southeastern part of Tibet, on the north bank of the Lhasa River, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. | The city's most famous landmark is the Potala Palace, which was the residence of the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. Today, the palace is a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other important sites in Lhasa include the Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Square, Norbulingka Palace, and Sera Monastery. Lhasa has a high altitude of over 3,600 meters (11,800 feet) and a cold and dry climate. The best time to visit is from April to October when the weather is relatively mild. The city is served by the Lhasa Gonggar Airport, and there are also road and rail connections to other parts of China. | |
