Baalbek is a city in eastern Lebanon, known for its impressive archaeological site filled with ancient ruins, particularly the grand Roman temples. Situated in the fertile Beqaa Valley, Baalbek was a major city in antiquity and is home to one of the largest and best-preserved Roman temple complexes in the world.
The most famous temples here include the Temple of Jupiter, with its massive columns that are among the largest in the world, and the Temple of Bacchus, a relatively smaller but incredibly well-preserved structure with intricate carvings.

The history of Baalbek dates back thousands of years, with evidence of Phoenician worship long before the Romans arrived. In Roman times, Baalbek was known as Heliopolis "City of the Sun" and became an essential center for both religion and culture. The Roman structures were built on top of earlier foundations, which themselves were crafted with massive stones known as the "megaliths" or "trilithon blocks." These stones are so enormous that modern engineers still marvel at how they were transported and assembled.
