Basilica of Saint Francis Piazza Inferiore di S. Francesco, 2, 06081 Assisi PG, Italy ☎ +39 075 819001 Last Updated: 01/12/2026 |
| The Basilica is a complex of immense artistic value, comprising two churches stacked upon each other yet harmoniously blended: the Lower Church, low and simple, and the Upper Church, with its bright and slender Gothic appearance. In addition is the crypt containing the Tomb of St. Francis, the heart of the Basilica. | |
| The lower church was completed in about two years, and on May 25, 1230, the remains of Saint Francis, in the presence of the entire population of Assisi who were joyfully celebrating the feast, were solemnly carried away and placed under the main altar, inside a rudimentary stone vessel. The church above was described by art historian Adolfo Venturi as "the most beautiful church in the world." Serving as an inspiration for Franciscan churches, it comprises a single nave, divided into four bays, with a large transept and a polygonal apse. | |
