Completely different from other churches in Lalibela, St. George's Church has become a symbol of Ethiopia. Carved into volcanic rock centuries ago, this church represents the spiritual heart of Ethiopia.
The Church of St. George, known locally as Bete Giyorgis, is the last of eleven churches carved into the rock in Lalibela, built by King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, and remains a site of immense cultural and religious significance.
