Glades County is situated in the Florida Heartland region of Florida, formed on April 23, 1921, from parts of DeSoto County. The county is named after the Florida Everglades, although much of its landscape consists of prairie and pinelands. As of the 2020 census, Glades County had a population of 12,126, making it the fourth-least populous county in Florida, with a density of approximately 16 people per square mile. | |
The area has a rich history, originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Following European contact, many native tribes faced significant depopulation due to warfare and disease. In the 18th century, various tribes migrated into Florida, contributing to the formation of the Seminole nation. After the Seminole Wars in the 19th century, many Indigenous peoples were forcibly removed to Indian Territory. |
