The county seat is Kodiak. The waterway connecting the island to the mainland is known as the Shelikof Strait. The fisheries sector plays a very important role in the local economy.
The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge encompasses nearly 1.9 million acres on Kodiak Island and the nearby Afognak Island. Kodiak Island has been inhabited for the past 8,000 years.
