Lang Vua Gia Long Huong Tho, Huong Tra , Thua Thien Hue Last Updated: 02/28/2025 |
The Mausoleum of Emperor Gia Long is located 16km from the centre of Hue, on top of the Thien Tho mountain, on the west bank of the Huong river. Construction of the tomb began in 1814 and was completed in 1820. | |
Located in a vast land covered with a wide canopy of old pine trees, the mausoleum was built according to a monumental but simple design. In front is a lotus pond. Behind the pond is a large terraced yard divided into three different levels. The first level was used as the waiting area and is bordered by two rows of elephant and horse statues. Gia Long, born Nguyen Phuc Anh, was the first emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnam. He was born in 1762 in the city of Hue, which was then part of the Kingdom of Vietnam. He was a member of the Nguyen family, which had long been a powerful noble family in Vietnam. In the late 18th century, Vietnam was divided into several smaller states, with the Tay Son Rebellion fighting for control over the country. Gia Long was a leader of one of the factions fighting against the Tay Son rebels, and he was eventually able to defeat them and unify Vietnam under his rule. As emperor, Gia Long implemented a number of reforms to modernize and strengthen the country. He abolished the old system of administrative divisions and created new provinces and districts, established anew legal code, and reorganized the military. He also encouraged trade and commerce, built roads and canals, and promoted education and scholarship. |
